« L’interprétation économique de l’impérialisme chez Schumpeter : renversement du matérialisme dialectique et légitimation du capitalisme »

Cet article propose une reconstruction de la théorie schumpétérienne de l’impérialisme et démontre comment elle se situe en contradiction de l’analyse austromarxiste en procédant à un double renversement : méthodologique d’une part par la réduction du matérialisme historique à une  “hypothèse de travail” et conceptuel d’autre part, en faisant de l’impérialisme un atavisme issu des structures guerrières féodales. Ce faisant, l’article montre comment ce double renversement permet à Schumpeter de disqualifier l’approche marxiste en proposant un narratif de légitimation du capitalisme comme processus de pacification des relations internationales et de désintégration de l’impérialisme.

« Between Political Economy and Modern Macroeconomics : Schumpeter’s Business Cycles »

This working paper takes Schumpeter’s Business Cycles (1939) as a witness for a better understanding of the transition of the discipline from political economy to macroeconomics during the interwar period. The main result of the paper is to show Schumpeter’s Business Cycles as a hybrid work: halfway between the themes inherited from 19th century European political economy and the tools of the emerging macroeconomics such as statistics, mathematics, and business cycles theories during the American interwar period. To do so, the paper undertakes an internalist analysis of Schumpeter’s understanding of the cycles as part of a much broader theory of capitalism, in which cycles are the expression of the economic, institutional, and cultural dimension of the capitalist process. It also contextualizes the book in its epoch and shows how the tools of emerging macroeconomics are used.

Léon Walras’ influence on J. A. Schumpeter is well known and documented. However, the literature insists on the legacy of the pure political economy branch. This paper proposes an inquiry on an underestimated scientific filiation: the influence of L. Walras’ applied political economy on Schumpeter’s theory of bank, credit and crises, by focusing particularly on two texts « Théorie mathématique du billet de banque » and « Théorie du crédit » on the formation of Schumpeter’s theory of bank and crises.

« From the Primtive Mentality to the Civilization of Capitalism: Schumpeter, reader of Lucien Lévy-Bruhl »

This working paper undertakes, for the first time, an investigation into the scientific filiation between Lucien Lévy-Bruhl’s anthropology and Schumpeter’s theory of capitalism, more particularly by focusing on the influence of Lévy-Bruhl’s concept of “primitive mentality” on Schumpeter’s conception of “civilization”. In doing so, the article sheds light on Schumpeter’s theorization of capitalism as an economic system, an institutional order, but also as a cultural process.
