Le drapeau se repasse en famille. Une lecture renouvelée du nationalisme banal

Résumé Cet article repose sur une recherche en cours, centrée sur la transmission des appartenances au sein de la famille. Il soutient qu’il est pertinent de prolonger la théorie proposée par Michael Billig il y a 30 ans afin d’expliquer la persistance et la vitalité du nationalisme dans un monde aussi largement globalisé que le nôtre. Il propose une relecture de la théorie du nationalisme banal, à la lumière des critiques qui lui ont été adressées, et sa mise en dialogue avec la sociologie de Norbert Elias, qui s’est lui aussi attaché à comprendre la reproduction du nationalisme à la fin du xx e siècle, quand beaucoup envisageaient sa fin. L’article montre également comment nous nous sommes efforcées d’opérationnaliser les conclusions tirées de ce dialogue grâce à un dispositif de recherche original, qui mobilise des techniques d’enquête projectives dans le cadre d’entretiens répétés de couples parentaux. Le corpus ainsi construit, d’une grande richesse, est en cours d’analyse, à l’aide d’un système d’hypothèses résultant du va-et-vient entre discussion théorique et mise en œuvre empirique présenté dans l’article.

This article draws from ongoing research focusing on the transmission of different forms of belonging within the family, particularly national belonging. It argues that the theory proposed by Michael Billig thirty years ago can serve as a valuable foundation to explain the persistent vitality of nationalism in a world as globalized as ours. Here we provide a new reading of the theory of “banal nationalism,” both from the perspective of the various critiques leveled against it, and by entering into dialogue with the sociology of Norbert Elias (who also sought to understand the reproduction of nationalism at the end of the 20th century, when many on the contrary foresaw its demise). This article also details the operationalization of the conclusions drawn from this dialogue between Billig and Elias in the form of an original empirical research design based on repeated, projective in-depth interviews with parents of young children in the Bordeaux area. The rich corpus produced by this empirical fieldwork is currently being analyzed using a system of hypotheses based on the productive intersection between the theoretical discussions and empirical implementations presented in this article.
